21 for 2021 goal wrap-up, part 3

As promised, I'm back today with part 3 of my 2021 goal wrap-up.

Here we go.  The format will be original goal, followed by my commentary and whether or not, and how, the goal was accomplished and/or what I thought and/or think about it.

  • Make marshmallows from scratch.
I didn't!  I think this is the one I'm the most disappointed about.  The problem with making marshmallows is, it needs to be not humid, but my family doesn't really consume marshmallows when it's not humid.  Because when it's not humid, it's winter.  So I thought about making marshmallows lots of times, but I wanted to give myself the best chance of success (by not making them when it was humid), and I also wanted to give myself the best chance of people actually eating them (by making them when it was bonfire season and when we had guests to help eat them).  Someday, I will make marshmallows.
  • Make a list of 21 go-to meals that (mostly) everyone in my family likes.
I started.  I think I stalled out at around 15.  Which is not nothing.  But is also not 21.
  • Oil wooden spoons, bowls, and cutting board regularly.  Not sure what "regularly" means.  Once a month?  Each quarter?  Once a year?  It's too nonspecific to be an actual goal, but it's my goal, so deal with it.
Well, I oiled them.  More than once.  So, yes?  I accomplished this one?  The spoons need to be oiled again.  Please pause.

OK.  I'm back.
  • Attempt to donate blood 6 times.  I'm saying attempt because I have a history of being rejected, and I want to make sure all of my goals are actually achievable.  If I successfully donate 6 times this year I'll earn my gallon pin, which should actually be a 2 gallon pin, but I took a long enough break in between that they stopped keeping track of my past donations.
I attempted.  I succeeded 2 1/2 times.  I want to save lives, put a I kinda hate rejection.  And I definitely hate the blood drive workers not letting me leave because I fainted/feel faint, when all I need to do to not feel faint anymore is to get.out.of.that.room.  (I eventually snuck out the back door while no one was looking).
  • Volunteer not-at-home at least 12 times this year (I was going to say once a month, but since volunteering is a little more difficult for me in the summer, and I've already volunteered more than once this year, I went with 12 times).
Yeah.  I stopped keeping track, but I'm pretty sure I made it, volunteering for food prep, food packing, food distribution, and food ordering for a food bank.  Yeah.  I'm a little food-obsessed, even in my volunteering.  Oh, and ornament making, but we're not going to talk about that one.  We're just going to pretend it never happened.  And yes, I totally skipped out on most of the clean-up, because I had already been there 1.5 hours longer than I committed to.
  • Grow paperwhites.  These are the little white flowers that are available around Christmas time when the amaryllis bulbs are in stores.
Yup, I did it.  And I learned something.  Paperwhites smell like stale pee.  They're kind of gross.  So while I was thinking that I would save the bulbs and attempt to force them next year, I am not.
  • Create a new goal.
Should I?  Should I create a new goal?  The way I'm feeling about goals right now?  No.  No, I should not.

And that's a wrap.

How about you?  Did you accomplish your 2021 goals?  Do you have any goals for 2022?  Let me know!

21 for 2021 goal wrap-up, part 2

Hey.  Happy 2022!  Let's be great this year.

As promised, I'm back today with part 2 of my 2021 goal wrap-up.

So here we go.  The format will be original goal, followed by my commentary and whether or not, and how, the goal was accomplished and/or what I thought and/or think about it.

  • Complete 12 new (to me) hikes.  Stretch goal: 21 new to me hikes
I'm not sure how many new (to me) hikes I completed.  It was more than 4 and less than 12.  When I set this goal, I was counting on my middle and youngest kiddos hiking with me on Wednesdays when their school let out 3 hours early every week.  And they did.  But then it got super cold (by super cold, I generally mean high temperatures below 0°F), and I didn't have the heart to force them to hike with me when we had cold temps and even colder wind chills.  And then it got warmer, but MC started an after school job, and Bubby started up football training on Wednesdays.  I know, excuses.  I definitely could have accomplished this goal even with those circumstances.  But I didn't.
  • Complete streaks of 20 and 21 days.  The 20 day streak will lend itself nicely to a Monday through Friday goal, and the 21 day streak will work for a 7 day a week goal.
I flossed my teeth every day for 21 days.  I did not accomplish the 20 day streak--I would have if I'd treated it the same way as the 21 day streak, rather than weekdays for 4 weeks.  Oh well.
  • Send birthday cards to 12 people I don't usually send birthday cards to.
Nope.  Sorry, people I don't usually send birthday cards to.
  • Walk at least 202.1 miles (hiking, skiing, snowshoeing, and running count.  As if I'm going to run any miles.  Ha).
Yup, I did that.  I think I passed the mark in July.  I mean, I probably passed the mark way before then, but that was when I passed the mark with walks recorded in my activity app.
  • Plant a pine cone.
Nope.  But I did, from time to time, look for likely pine-cone-planting candidates as I walked from the house to the chicken coop and back.
  • Go to at least one in-person flower show at the conservatory.  Stretch goal: go to all of the shows either in person or virtually.
Nope.  I made an attempt to get our Christmas visitors to go with me, thus accomplishing this goal, but it didn't happen.
  • Obtain a non-plastic countertop (which I will keep under the sink, because I hate countertop clutter) compost bin.  My current kitchen compost is in a repurposed plastic container, and it stinks.  The plastic picks up odors from the compost, and will not release them.  That's why I need something not-plastic.
I wanted something pretty specific, and I haven't been able to find what I wanted for a price I was willing to pay.  I wanted it to be ceramic or stoneware, with a carrying handle, a seal around the lid, a capacity of at least 3 quarts, and a price tag under $30.  I also wanted it to look pretty.  Or at least not garish.  No dice.  I did, however, find something that met all but one of the criteria, and I ordered it yesterday.  It was totally not a last ditch effort to accomplish at least one more 2021 goal.

All right.  We're almost done with these goal wrap-up posts.  Back tomorrow with the final installment.

21 for 2021 goal wrap-up, part 1

I promised a 21 for 2021 goal wrap-up post, and I'm generally a person who keeps promises, so here I am with a wrap-up.  I've decided to wrap in three parts because I just don't think I'll be able to hold your attention for a whole 21 goals.  I mean, that would be a lot of words.  And 21 just lends itself so nicely to three parts of seven.

So here we go.  The format will be original goal, followed by my commentary and whether or not, and how, the goal was accomplished and/or what I thought and/or think about it.

  • Set up a spreadsheet to keep track of mystery shopping assignments, payment, and reimbursement.  There's one particular mystery shopping company that I really need to keep a close eye on payments for, and the system I've used in the past--hatch marks on an envelope--revealed itself to be insufficient last year, so I really need a new system.
I did this!  I was so proud of myself for figuring out how to format the spreadsheet so that it would automatically keep track of assignments and payment amounts in total and by mystery shopping company.  I liked this system so much that I've copied it to use again next year.
  • Set up an electronic list of future projects--these can include Cricut projects, building projects, or really any ideas for future projects that I may want to accomplish at some point in the future, but that have no urgency or due date.  I do have a running list in my to-do notebook, but an electronic list would be easier to organize, which would make it easier to keep track of what's on the list.
I did set up an electronic list of future projects, but I simply added all of the projects that were on my written list and then never looked at it again.  As much as I would like to be, I am not a person who does well with electronic lists.
  • Complete 10 of the projects from my electronic project list (it's acceptable to add something to the list just to cross it off).
So, I just looked at the list (see above goal), and I didn't do anything--not one thing--from the electronic list.  Which is an accomplishment in itself, yes?
  • Declutter and reorganize Pinterest boards.  At the beginning of the year, I had over 1600 pins in 90 boards.  It's too much.  I'm hoping to get down to 21 reorganized boards.  Twenty-one, because it's 2021, not because I've done careful consideration and planning and decided that 21 is the number of boards I need.
I consider this goal complete: I did reduce my number of pins and pinboards.  Unfortunately, this kind of thing actually needs to happen regularly, so even though I completed the goal, I have not (and will never) complete the task.
  • Declutter electronic mystery shopping receipts, photos, and screen shots.  Again.
Yup.  Did it.  Need to do it again, and annually.
  • Unsubscribe from 21 email lists in the first 21 days of 2021
Absolutely.  In fact, I unsubscribed from 40 email lists before I stopped keeping count.  This is, once again, is a never-ending task.  *Sigh*
I accomplished this one, too!  In fact, I achieved Megastar (which is better than Superstar) on all of the extreme versions except one.  It's been a while since I've danced--I need to get back to it.

So that's the first seven.  Not bad, eh?  Well, especially not-bad for a person who decided almost immediately upon stating her goals that she didn't actually want to do any of those things.

I'll be back tomorrow with the next seven.

21 for 2021 June/July update

Welp.  Yeah.  I told you I didn't want to do this.  But I've kind of been doing it anyway, so I thought I'd let you know how much progress I've made on my 2021 goals.

Truthfully, I haven't even looked at these since February, but I think I might be surprised at how much I've actually done.

  1. Set up a spreadsheet to keep track of mystery shopping assignments, payment, and reimbursement.  DONE
  2. Set up an electronic list of future projects. DONE
  3. Complete 10 of the projects from my electronic project list.  One?  I haven't been doing many projects this year, nor have I been keeping track.
  4. Declutter and reorganize Pinterest boards.  I'm currently sitting at 20 boards and 889 pins, and I'm calling it DONE
  5. Declutter electronic mystery shopping receipts, photos, and screen shots.  DONE, but this is a never ending project, because I keep doing shops.
  6. Unsubscribe from 21 email lists in the first 21 days of 2021.  DONE
  7. Improve my scores on all 2019 and 2020 Just Dance Extreme versions to Superstar or better.  Only one more to go!
  8. Complete 12 new (to me) hikes.  Four.
  9. Complete streaks of 20 and 21 days.  I completed the 21 day streak.  I attempted the 20 day streak (walking 3 miles a day, 5 days a week, for 4 weeks), and made it to day 16 before it got hot and we went out of town.  I think if just one of those conditions had occurred I would have completed the streak.  I'll definitely try again.  When it's cooler.
  10. Send birthday cards to 12 people I don't usually send birthday cards to.  Nope.  And I don't think I actually know 12 people who have birthdays in the last half of the year, and whose addresses I have.  So this one isn't happening.
  11. Walk at least 202.1 miles.  Through June, I had walked 186 miles.
  12. Plant a pine cone. Not yet.
  13. Go to at least one in-person flower show at the conservatory.  None so far.  Christmas is my favorite, but it's risky to wait that long to complete the goal, because December is hard.
  14. Obtain a non-plastic countertop compost bin.  I'm working on it, friends.  Most countertop compost bins are metal (which is susceptible to rust) or plastic (which holds odors).
  15. Make marshmallows from scratch.  Nope, but I've thought about it often in the past few weeks, and it might be not-humid enough this weekend, so maybe.
  16. Make a list of 21 go-to meals that (mostly) everyone in my family likes. I'm up to seven.  This one is a lot more difficult than it looks.
  17. Oil wooden spoons, bowls, and cutting board regularly.  I have oiled the spoons, bowls, and cutting board twice.
  18. Attempt to donate blood 6 times.  I'm up to four.  First time, my appointment was canceled because of a problem with the equipment.  Second time, I donated successfully.  Third time, I wasn't feeling well.  Fourth time, well, we won't talk about that time except to say that Dan needs to improve his bedside manner and I am really disappointed that I was able to start, but unable to complete that donation.  I'm feeling discouraged, but I do have another appointment scheduled for August.
  19. Volunteer not-at-home at least 12 times this year.  Six so far.
  20. Grow paperwhites. Waiting until November.  Again, this is risky, because November is also hard.
  21. Create a new goal.  Eh.  Not really?  I don't think?  Maybe?

So hey.  Not too shabby, eh?  Especially for not intentionally working on any of my 2021 goals.

I will continue to not work on them, and maybe I'll update you again sometime.  Or maybe I won't.

How are you doing on your 2021 goals?

Thursday, May 27, 2021

So. About those goals.

I set some goals for this year.  And then I almost immediately regretted it.  And since then I've been ignoring them entirely.

It's a bit flummoxing.  I mean, I absolutely rocked my goals last year, finishing 20 goals by the end of June.  And if ever there was a year with a good excuse to give up on goals, it was 2020.  But I didn't give up last year.  And I did give up this year.  Or actually, I didn't give up, I just avoided, which is probably worse.  I am not willing to admit to myself that I made a mistake, so I'm just not.  Not anything.

It is actually not at all confusing or perplexing, y'all.  I am spent.  All of the emotionally energy required to make it through the past 15 months, supporting and loving my family well, has emptied me, and I got nothing left*.  There is no more emotional energy to care about completing goals that I don't actually want to complete.

Anyway, it's not all bad news.  Or even any bad news.  Just news, I guess.  I may or may not complete any or all of my original 2021 goals, and that's ok.  I have given myself permission to not stress about it (which does not mean that I am, in fact, not stressing about it, but whatever.  Baby steps).

Well.  I'm glad I've got that off my chest and out there into the universe.  So how about an update**?

You guys.  I am so close to achieving a Superstar or better rating on all of the Extreme versions in Just Dance 2019 and 2020.  I am one song away.  What?  Who am I?  A superstar, that's who. (That was ironic.  There is no way on this earth that I would actually call myself a superstar.  Ha.  The very thought is preposterous.)

I'll keep you posted.

Or not.

* Are you as annoyed as I am by how dramatic I'm making it sound?  I mean, it feels dramatic, but also the human system tends toward homeostasis, which means we can become accustomed to anything, so it's not actually all that dramatic.  It just is.

Do you floss? My 21 day streak.

Hello, my friends.  Do you floss regularly?  I mean floss your teeth, not floss the "dance."  Through years of observation, I have come to the conclusion that most people don't.  I've lived with a lot of people, first in a residence hall for four years, and then at a summer camp where I was on staff.  I have seen hundreds of women going through their hygiene routines, and I have never seen another person floss their teeth (aside from various family members, some regularly, and others sporadically).

And then there was that one time at MOPS.  We were playing some kind of game--I'm a little foggy on the rules, but it was something like one person stands in the middle of a circle of people sitting in chairs, and the person in the middle says something that's true about themselves, and then everyone who is sitting in the circle about whom that thing is also true has to stand up and quickly find another seat, leaving one person still standing in the middle of the circle.  It's kind of like musical chairs, but not really.

The woman who was in the middle said, "I floss my teeth twice a day."  And no one moved.  We just kind of stared at her like she was some mythical creature.  And to be honest, to women who have children that have not yet started school, someone who takes the time to floss daily, not once, but twice, does seem like kind of a unicorn.  I mean, some of us could barely shower, and even teeth-brushing sometimes went by the wayside.  She stood there, incredulous, exclaiming, "nobody?!"

I asked the Google, and she told me that only about 32% of adults in the US over the age of 30 floss their teeth daily (she sited a source, but I have since lost it).  Even that seems high to me.  I characterize my own flossing as regular, but I don't floss every day.  It definitely goes in spurts, but I estimate that, on average, I floss 4 to 5 times per week.  Knowing the fallibility of the human brain, I'm probably estimating high, but the point is, I should be flossing every day.  I would like to keep my teeth for as long as possible, thankyouverymuch.  Although, the very best food in the world (ice cream) does not require teeth, so, I guess I'd survive.

One of my issues with being able to floss daily is that I think I need to do it at night, so my teeth are nice and clean overnight.  Often, by the time I'm getting ready for bed, I'm tired enough that flossing, even though it only takes a minute or so, seems like too much work.  So I skip it.  Now, I've given myself permission to floss earlier in the day.

As you may remember, one of my goals in 2021 is to complete streaks of 20 and 21 days.  Right now I'm smack dab in the middle of my 21 day streak, flossing my teeth daily.  According to conventional wisdom, it takes 21 days to form a new habit, so I'm hoping flossing will stick.

How about you?  Do you floss regularly?  Daily?

21 for 2021 January update

You guys.  I don't know what I was thinking.  I don't want to do those things.  Not all of them, anyway.  Why, oh why, did I not follow the 2020 goal model?  Why didn't I brainstorm a list of possible goals, and decide which ones I wanted to accomplish as I progressed through the year?

Note to self: do that next year.

So,  here's what's happened so far (the numbers in parenthesis are the goal number from the list at the end of the post).

  • (1) I set up a spreadsheet to keep track of my mystery shopping assignments.  I even figured out how to sum cells in a column if a check box is clicked in another column.  This spreadsheet will make it so much easier to keep track of assignments and payments.
  • (4) I've begun decluttering Pinterest.  As of this writing, I'm down to under 1200 pins and 41 boards.  This job will be significantly easier because Pinterest added the capability to add sections to boards not too long ago.
  • (6) In the first 21 days of 2021, I unsubscribed from 30 email lists before I stopped counting.  I get significantly fewer emails these days.  I also unsubscribed from a couple of text messages from businesses.
  • (7) I've improved my scores on all JD 2019 extreme versions to superstar or better.  All but two are megastar scores.  I haven't danced JD 2020 for a while, so I'm not sure where I stand there, but I'm pretty sure I have at least 3 to go there.
  • (8) I've completed three new (to me) hikes.  It was actually four, but I decided these hikes need to be over 1 mile in length to count.
  • (11) I walked 11.87 miles in January.  In order to complete 202.1 miles in 2021, I need to walk a little under 17 miles a month.  I'm not too worried, though, because I'll be walking more in the spring and fall than in the winter.
  • (18) I have attempted to donate blood two times so far this year.  The first was canceled because there was a problem with the bloodmobile.  The second was successful.
  • (19) I have volunteered not-at-home six times so far this year.  All of these sessions involved food.  Huh.
So that's two fully completed goals, and several in progress.  Not too bad, eh?

In February, I plan to continue to work on the year-long goals, as well as the electronic goals (2, 4, 5, and 7).  I'm also hoping to start my first streak (9).

Here's a list of the goals:
  1. Set up a spreadsheet to keep track of mystery shopping assignments, payment, and reimbursement.  There's one particular mystery shopping company that I really need to keep a close eye on payments for, and the system I've used in the past--hatch marks on an envelope--revealed itself to be insufficient last year, so I really need a new system.
  2. 3. Complete 10 of the projects from my electronic project list (it's acceptable to add something to the list just to cross it off).
  4. 5. Declutter electronic mystery shopping receipts, photos, and screen shots.  Again.
  6. Unsubscribe from 21 email lists in the first 21 days of 2021
  7. Improve my scores on all 2019 and 2020 Just Dance Extreme versions to Superstar or better.  I've been working on 2019, and I've only got one more to go.  I'm not sure where I stand on 2020.
  8. Complete 12 new (to me) hikes.  Stretch goal: 21 new to me hikes
  9. Complete streaks of 20 and 21 days.  The 20 day streak will lend itself nicely to a Monday through Friday goal, and the 21 day streak will work for a 7 day a week goal.
  10. Send birthday cards to 12 people I don't usually send birthday cards to.
  11. Walk at least 202.1 miles (hiking, skiing, snowshoeing, and running count.  As if I'm going to run any miles.  Ha).
  12. Plant a pine cone.
  13. Go to at least one in-person flower show at the conservatory.  Stretch goal: go to all of the shows either in person or virtually.
  14. Obtain a non-plastic countertop (which I will keep under the sink, because I hate countertop clutter) compost bin.  My current kitchen compost is in a repurposed plastic container, and it stinks.  The plastic picks up odors from the compost, and will not release them.  That's why I need something not-plastic.
  15. Make marshmallows from scratch.
  16. Make a list of 21 go-to meals that (mostly) everyone in my family likes.
  17. Oil wooden spoons, bowls, and cutting board regularly.  Not sure what "regularly" means.  Once a month?  Each quarter?  Once a year?  It's too nonspecific to be an actual goal, but it's my goal, so deal with it.

  20. Grow paperwhites.  These are the little white flowers that are available around Christmas time when the amaryllis bulbs are in stores.
  21. Create a new goal.

21 for 2021

Today I am doing something that has been on my to-do list every day so far this year, and even a few days last year, too.  I am writing (and publishing, because that's how I keep track) my 21 for 2021 list.  I'm not even sure it'll be 21 items, but I'll do my best.

It's taken me this long, well, I'm not exactly sure why?  Commitment issues?  Inertia?  Perfectionism?  Depression?  Pandemic exhaustion?  All of the above?

Anyway, if you've been around for a while, you've probably seen at least one of my goal posts (ha!  Goal posts.  Perhaps I should say one of my posts about goals).  Many years ago I gave up on new year's resolutions and started making goals.  And then three years ago, I took Gretchen Rubin's advice, and numbered my goals according to the year I was in: 18 goals in 2018, 19 in 2019, and so on.  I really enjoy this method of goal formation.  It's a little whimsical, and it's fun to be part of a group of people that I don't even know, each pursuing their individual goals.

So I'm going to type out some goals I'd like to accomplish this year, and hopefully there will be 21 of them by the time I'm done.  Wish me luck!

  8. Complete 12 new (to me) hikes.  Stretch goal: 21 new to me hikes

  18. Attempt to donate blood 6 times.
  19. Volunteer not-at-home at least 12 times this year (I was going to say once a month, but since volunteering is a little more difficult for me in the summer, and I've already volunteered more than once this year, I went with 12 times).
  20. Grow paperwhites.  These are the little white flowers that are available around Christmas time when the amaryllis bulbs are in stores.
  21. Create a new goal.
Hey, look at that, friends.  I did it.  I listed 21 goals to accomplish in 2021  :)

Stay tuned, because next I'll update you on the 2020 goals I accomplished after I finished the first 20.  Does that seem a little out of order to you?  It's fine.  Don't worry about it.

Have you set any goals for this year?  Let me know in the comments!
